I think I'm more frightened just by people who have an utterly insatiable desire to make money hand over fist. If they were vampires, there'd be nothing left of their victims but jerky and bone.

Twenty years from now? Well, I hope the technology is waterproof. On the bright side, maybe we'll all be "uploaded" (extinct) by then.

Somalia. Ah, to be in Mogadishu and bask in the ambience of hot lead . . . .

Hmm . . . I used to have this idea about a duet that would practically make you tear your ears off to quell the tickling sensation in your head. But I'm a little fuzzy about the choice. It involved two of the following three (but I don't remember which two): Bryan Ferry, Julio Iglesias, Slim Whitman. I don't think any two of them have ever done a duet together. And perish the thought of a trio: everyone in the world would be laughing hysterically as he jumped from the roof of a skyscraper.

Excerpt from my inauguration speech:

"From this day on, the official language of the United States will be Swedish. Silence! In addition to that, all citizens will be required to change their underwear every half-hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check. Furthermore, all children under 16 years old are now... 16 years old!"

What's the Swedish word for straitjacket?

Kurt Vonnegut, on his friend Joseph Heller:

True story, Word of Honor:

Joseph Heller, an important and funny writer

now dead,

and I were at a party given by a billionaire

on Shelter Island.

I said, “Joe, how does it make you feel

to know that our host only yesterday

may have made more money

than your novel ‘Catch-22’

has earned in its entire history?”

And Joe said, “I’ve got something he can never have.”

And I said, “What on earth could that be, Joe?”

And Joe said, “The knowledge that I’ve got enough.”

Not bad! Rest in peace!

Catch-22 is sort of both. But if you've read that . . . I'll have to think a spell.

A good day's work or a good night's rest?

Sometimes keeping busy helps. There's not necessarily as much to do in the evening, and so somethings you just have to find something. But if you can't sleep, doing something is kind of questionable. Sometimes reading helps a person go back to sleep. I cheat as much as I need to to get to sleep and to stay sleeping. I don't necessarily think about death if I can't sleep, but I think about the future. And that's the next worst thing.
